The Colonel Palmer House
in Crystal Lake
Gustavus Palmer and his wife Henrietta arrived in McHenry County from
Nunda, New York by covered wagon around 1849. They were able to
purchase land from the Federal Government as early settlers
to the area.
Mr. Palmer, or the Colonel, as he was called by his neighbors, became a
successful farmer and was able by 1858 to build the Palmer
House. It is comprised of elements of Greek Revival and
Federalist styles of architecture. It is the only building in
Crystal Lake that is on the National Register of Historic Places.
